  attention (i.e., not appearing distracted by a clipboard or cell phone). You

  you.&rdquo; Responding this way will let families know you care about them and
  take their questions and concerns seriously.

  communicating health information. In general, most privacy statutes indicate
  that health information should only be given to those specifically authorized
  by the patient. Because of this, you will have to make sure you&rsquo;re
  communicating patient information only with the inpiduals who should receive
  it, rather than an entire family or group of friends. It&rsquo;s not uncommon
  for inpiduals to become agitated about privacy rules and demand information.
  It&rsquo;s important you stand your ground and maintain the privacy of your
  patient no matter what push-back you may receive from others.

  In the case of a sick patient and a family member, honesty is always the best
  policy. The last thing you want to do is lie about a patient&rsquo;s condition
  just to calm a worried loved one. Once youare aware of the family members who
  are authorized to receive information, be prepared to tell the truth.
  You&rsquo;ll likely receive reactions of sadness or anger. Be sure to remain
  calm and act as a sounding board for the family; providing comfort and
  understanding during a difficult time will enhance their trust in your care.
